PARTICIPATION IN ACTION

Volunteer With SELF

Our volunteers help SELF run smoothly, welcome our attendees, and make the event memorable. We could not produce SELF without the time and dedication of our volunteer staff. To every volunteer who gives their time, care, and energy: thank you. Volunteers truly make the SELF world go round. Thank you for your interest in joining the team.

The Process of Becoming a SELF Volunteer

  1. Fill out the volunteer application form below. Please wait to purchase your weekend package or register for the event until you receive instructions. Registering before you receive an email with instructions will cause issues with your discount.
  2. You will receive a welcome email with your next steps. Register as soon as possible using the instructions sent to you. Registration closes on May 22. If you do not complete registration prior to registration closing, you will be dropped as a volunteer and lose your discount.
  3. Volunteer shifts and Bootblack hours are available on a first come, first served basis. Beginning March 1st, the schedule link will be sent out at intervals based on the date registration is completed. Volunteer scheduling closes May 30, 2027.
  4. We will review your schedule and confirm that you are signed up for the correct number of hours. Schedule confirmations will be sent by June 6, 2027.
  5. Attend mandatory training. You are required to attend one zoom training session for each position you select. If you sign up for more than one position, you need to attend one training for each.
  6. Sign in and out for all shifts at the volunteer table during the event.
  7. Have fun—we're glad to have you on the team!

Volunteer Positions Available:

Curtain Monitors - These Volunteers will be placed at curtain checkpoints to check badges in order to ensure attendees are registered. They also regularly communicate with Security and Volunteer Assistants to help maintain the event.

Runners - These Volunteers will sit at the Volunteer table and be used as needed to give breaks, run errands, and assist with anything needed by the Volunteer coordinator and Assistants.

Volunteer Table - These volunteers assist with getting people signed into or out of their volunteer shifts. Volunteers in this area must be customer service oriented, polite, and able to multitask. They will need to be able to handle constant communication with the volunteer assistants and Cynthia. There are a limited number of spaces available.

Changeover - These volunteers will assist in the movement of chairs, supplies, and other equipment. The ability to lift is required. These shifts often happen between events or classes.

Registration - These volunteers assist Jack with managing registration tasks. Tasks could include crowd control, handing out clipboards and water, or assisting those who need accommodations. Those helping with registration must be able to stand for their shift. These positions are limited and most of them are on Thursday afternoon/evening.

Information Table - These volunteers are responsible for helping attendees get answers to their questions. They need to be able to respond to questions regarding the layout of the hotel, where and when classes are taking place, where registration is, class cancellations, and general knowledge questions. You must be able to use YAPP, read and interpret a hotel layout diagram, and understand a weekend schedule in grid form. Must also be able to use a two-way radio. This table will also hold lost and found items.

Specialty Teams:

Medical - This Volunteer team will assist with evaluation and assistance with medical issues. At a minimum these Volunteers must have a current CPR and First Aid certification. Please upload credentials along with your submission.

Security - This Volunteer team will monitor the event to assist the Volunteer Coordinator and Security Team Leads with maintaining a space consistent with SELF policies and regulations. Must be able to be on your feet and/or walk for 4-6 hour shifts. Previous and/or current security experience is a plus. You will need to be able to attend an in-person training session onsite Thursday afternoon, and at least one shift between the hours of 8pm-2am will be required.
Workshop Caretakers - This Volunteer team is responsible for delivery and pick up of supplies to all classrooms, ensuring presenters have what they need on the ground, providing reminders as needed, recording class counts, ensuring rooms are set to specifications, and handing out goodie bags, etc.

Load In/Load Out - This Volunteer team will work Wed/Thurs and Sunday. These volunteers must be capable of heavy lifting and working 6-hour shifts. These volunteers are split into several different types:
  • The storage team is a team of 4-6 that will meet at the storage unit on Wednesday afternoon. They load the truck and come to the hotel where they will unload what will be needed immediately and then assist with making registration bags and folding t-shirts. Transportation to and from the storage unit is required for this team. They also work Sunday to help load the truck at the hotel and return to storage to load it into the storage unit.
  • The onsite team is a team of 6 that will start early Thursday morning to unload and distribute supplies at the hotel. They will return early Sunday morning to pack up supplies.
  • The vendor team will be a team of 2-3 people who work to help vendors unload and set up early on Thursday. They will return to help break down and load out on Sunday at midday. More information will be provided as we get closer to the event.
  • The play space team is a team of 4 that will work with Sadistic Engineering to unload and assemble their equipment early on Thursday. They will return to break down and load out early on Sunday.

    SELF Promotes Diverse Voices

SELF recognizes and values the rich diversity within our community.  We proactively cultivate multicultural representation and inclusion throughout all aspects of our event by prioritizing collaboration with community members who are marginalized on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender (identity or expression), sexual orientation, and/or disability.  With our commitment to diversity in mind, are you a member of a marginalized community?

    If so, tell us more.

At SouthEast LeatherFest, we commit to providing our community with a culturally diverse event and hold ourselves accountable to ensure we meet this goal.  We've provided checkboxes to provide us with a broad view of community representation as well as a fill-in option to learn about your specific identity. To help us evaluate our work, if you chose to, please tell us about yourself. We will use this data to ensure that we are uplifting marginalized voices and we are bringing the culturally diverse event to our community that we promise.  This information is confidential and will never be shared.
